The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The former head of state was sentenced of planning a military coup in the ninth month and sentenced more than over two decades in jail, but he was staying under house arrest pending legal challenges.

He said the vigil would be so supporters could seek divine intervention for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our country."

Context of Sentencing

He was found guilty of heading a conspiracy aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the presidential race to his ideological adversary, Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he was aware of a plan which included plans to kill his opponent and his running partner, Alckmin, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the top judicial official who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.

The conspiracy was stopped because it failed to get the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. His successor was inaugurated without problem on 1 January 2023.

But a week later, on 8 January, numerous his backers stormed and vandalised official structures in the national capital, Brasília.

The security forces took action and around fifteen hundred individuals were detained.

The judges found that the protesters had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to take action, reestablish control and bring him back to power.

At the time, the legal team called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also barred from running for public office until the year 2060 - eight years later after the conclusion of his imprisonment.
