One extended journey through the Australian Coast is being halted days after the fatal incident of an older female passenger who was left behind by the vessel on a distant island.

The passenger had been hiking on the remote island with fellow passengers from the cruise ship, but parted ways from the group for a break. The liner departed without her and went back after some time after the ship staff discovered the lady was missing.

A large-scale hunt discovered her remains the next day.

Authorities are looking into the tragedy, together with police and the medical examiner.

The CEO of the shipping company stated that guests and crew on the ship were notified that the rest of the journey had been called off due to the "unfortunate death and previous engine troubles".

Via official communication, he added that passengers would be provided a complete reimbursement, and said the operator was working "to arrange the homeward trips of the individuals via private aircraft".

Regulatory bodies also published an latest statement, and said they had "provided a notice to the Captain" preventing any additional guests from getting on the ship.

The spokesperson said that they would visit the ship in Cairns upon its return.

Sequence of Events

The liner initially left the coastal city on October 24th, and was just two days into the voyage at the point of the elderly woman's death. The remote island was the initial destination on the voyage.

Guests on the ship - who generally pay substantial amounts of dollars to participate in the expedition - were ferried there for a day trip with the possibility of walking or snorkelling.

Family Reaction

The offspring of the elderly passenger said that her relatives was "shocked and grieved that the liner left the island after an organised tour without my mum".

In her statement, she characterized her mother as an "vigorous 80-year-old" who was a member of a walking club.

"From the little information we have been told, it seems that there was a breakdown of attention and basic judgment," she mentioned.

She continued that she wished the inquiry would be able to identify what "the operator should have undertaken that might have protected Mum's being".

"We understand from the police that it was a exceptionally warm period, and mum became unwell on the hill climb," she stated.

"She was asked her to go back, alone. Then the vessel departed, apparently without conducting a passenger count.

"At a certain moment in that chain of events, or not long after, mother died, alone."

Operator Response

In a statement, the CEO confirmed that the operator was "working closely with officials to assist their examination".

He said that the company was "extremely apologetic that this has transpired" and had provided its total backing to the family.

Shipping Sector Procedures

The vessel serves up to one hundred twenty passengers with 46 staff, according to official information. It was specially constructed to reach distant locations of the nation's coastline and is equipped with "small boats" - minor craft used to transport passengers on land visits.

Incidents such as this are rare, and cruise ships have systems to document which passengers are getting on or getting off, according to travel authorities.

"Sneaking ashore or [back] aboard just isn't an possibility," a specialist stated.

Vessel operators consider these processes with great importance and have "clever tech in place to prevent such events from happening," the authority continued.
