The megacity Wakes Up to Hazardous Smog After Diwali
As Tuesday dawned citizens of the planet's dirtiest urban center encountered breathing extremely polluted air that was classified as the "alarming" category.
Record-Breaking Pollution Measurements
Several parts of the city showed an pollution measurement exceeding 500, which represents a tenfold increase over the recommended level set by the WHO.
Certain monitoring stations, readings of PM2.5 and PM10 hit highs of 1800, equating to fifteen to twenty times above safe limits.
Firecracker Restrictions and Recent Policy Shifts
For the past four years, authorities had maintained a comprehensive restriction on the distribution and bursting of firecrackers during celebrations due to their major role to the dangerous pollution that covers the capital as the cold season begins.
However in recent months, the newly elected local government petitioned the judicial authority to seek a relaxation of the prohibition.
They proposed allowing "green crackers" – which have been questioned by conservation groups as being only approximately one-third reduced emissions – as a compromise between "tradition and public health".
Legal Decision and Reality
Despite concerns of medical and ecological advocates, judicial authorities agreed to the proposal, mandating that environmentally conscious fireworks could be set off during designated time windows throughout the festival.
During the celebrations, there was widespread disregard of the time restrictions across the capital, with insufficient regulation regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the more environmentally friendly version.
Several monitoring devices throughout Delhi showed pollution peaking around late evening to some of the worst readings recorded during celebrations in at least the past three years.
International Implications
Extensive ignition of firecrackers during Diwali also triggered a dispute with bordering Pakistan, with officials in Pakistan's Punjab partially attributing worsening atmospheric conditions in Lahore on contaminants traveling from India following the celebrations.
Chronic Environmental Issue
Extremely elevated concentrations of pollution in the capital have continued as a serious issue for more than 15 years, with the condition gradually deteriorating.
Around celebratory seasons, the amount of toxic particles in the environment has been found to increase dramatically to 70% higher the most severe levels ever documented in China's capital, which was formerly viewed as the world's most polluted urban center.
Multiple Contamination Contributors
The situation in the capital is caused by a combination of different contributors including heavy vehicle emissions, airborne particles, building projects, garbage fires and smoke from farm burning in neighbouring areas of farming communities.
In these regions, farmers routinely burn crop residue to prepare for next season, producing toxic pollution that becomes contained over the capital as cooler air arrives.
Health and Economic Toll
Both financial and medical impact on the roughly thirty-three million inhabitants living in the capital region is enormous, according to numerous studies.
These hazardous conditions leads to high levels of nervous system, cardiovascular and breathing disorders, and can even lead to malignancies.
Environmental contamination is projected to be responsible for approximately 10k premature mortalities per year in the city.
